Phi de résistance

We made it to the famously beautiful islands of Koh Phi Phi! The are known for movies like James Bond and The Beach... Lonley Planet put it well, as with Marilyn Monroe, "its beauty will lead to its own demise and everyone wants a piece of it." Until then however, we feel extremely fortunate to experience the island's striking beauty.

Hey maybe beauty does lead to its own demise since I, Katie, came down with major food poisoning one hour after we checked into our hotel. Does a box of Imodium, pepto, bottle of Advil and day and night in the bathroom sum it up for you? I can't remeber the last time I felt that terrible, but luckily it only lasted 24 hours right on the dot so I was out buzzing around like my old self just the next day.

We met some friends on the beach at an extremely low-tide, both from South Africa (next on Katie's  bucket list) and rented a kayak again to escape the more touristy beach in search of more exclusive sights, and we found them! Tying the kayaks to rocks jutting up from the water, we dove into the crystal clear water and snorkeled for several hours away from the hype in town. It was surreal! We snorkeled under massive limestone cliffs and around vibrant coral reefs. The friends we met were better informed than us on the names of some of the fish; we saw eels, lion fish, puffer fish and basically the whole cast of Finding Nemo... Unfortunately, since the sights are underwater and we don't have an underwater digital camera, we don't have pictures to share, oh well :)

Day three we spent the afternoon lounging on the beach, soaking up the sun and swimming in the pool- like water. Later we stumbled upon the infamous "Banana Bar," which we had been on the lookout for for weeks after hearing about their amazing nachos! We did indeed get our beef nachos on that night and stayed later for a likely black market screening of the movie Her.

A note on Mexican food outside of the states and Mexico: it's not the same. The tortilla chips are never deep fried to a crunchy perfection and the meat always seems to be a little too sweet for my salty American taste. However, it is nice to get some food variety in the land of phad thai, curry and fried rice.

The next day we hiked to three viewpoints in Phi Phi's mountains lush mountains. Each of the peaks overlooks Phi Phi's various sandy bays. That day Aidan decided to get a "Thai style haircut," which he was extremely nervous for, but it actually turned out really well! Afterwards we headed to Banana Bar for another round of nachos and stayed for the screening of Captain Phillips. Later we enjoyed a fire dancing show where people jump rope over a fire lit rope and of course Aidan wanted in on the fun... Extremely dangerous considering the amount of bandaged post burned tourists we had seen over the last few days. He did phenomenal! It was pretty nerve racking watching him perform since he decided to jump in as the music and rope sped up, it was a very entertaining night to say the least!

After four days in the busy, loud, tourist infested residence of Ko Phi Phi we decided to head to a new island that we knew nothing about except that it had a more serene and relaxed atmosphere... Ko Lanta.
